DeKalb Choirs Win, Head for State Finals

DeKalb High School’s Classic Connection show choir delivers its winning performance Saturday in Watseka, Ill.




WATSEKA, Ill. — DeKalb High School’s show choirs swept the top trophies in a contest Saturday at Watseka High School in eastern Illinois.

The contest served as the last tune-up for the choirs before Saturday’s Indiana state championship competition.

At Watseka. DeKalb’s Sound Sensation choir captured the grand championship in the unisex division along with the award for best band. El Paso Gridley of Illinois placed second.

Christy Williams was chosen as the best performer in Sound Sensation’s show. The girls also qualified for the overall finals and placed third among all groups.

DeKalb’s Classic Connection mixed choir won the overall grand championship at Watseka along with awards for best choreography, best vocals and best costumes. Brittany Pogue was selected as the best performer in Classic Connection’s show.

DeKalb’s director, Shelley Johnson, said she is extremely pleased with how both choirs are performing going into the state finals next weekend.

DeKalb Show Choirs will present a free community preview show in the high school auditorium Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and recognize its senior members at the event.
