MONTICELLO — DeKalb High School show choirs opened the winter competition season Saturday with a grand champion trophy and a runner-up finish in a contest at Twin Lakes High School.

DeKalb’s Sound Sensation was crowned grand champion in the girls division with awards for best vocal sound and best visual effect. Columbia City placed second, with Northrop was third. Judges chose DeKalb’s Megan Buss as the best individual performer.

DeKalb’s Classic Connection finished as first runner-up among mixed choirs, tying with Northrop for best visual effect. Bishop Luers won the division, with Columbia City in third and Northrop fourth. Brittany Pogue was DeKalb’s top performer.

DeKalb’s Brandon Park placed as first runner-up in a separate solo competion, singing “What Do I Need With Love?” from “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

This weekend, Classic Connection will perform Saturday at the Indiana Music Educators Association state convention in Fort Wayne at the Grand Wayne Center. Neither DeKalb group will be competing.

DeKalb’s choirs need sponsors of medallions for champions of next month’s DeKalb Invitational contest. Sponsorships cost $5 for each medallion, with 300 to be awarded.
