James R. Watson Elementary

Students who express an interest in learning more about the world around them may find that James R. Watson Elementary School, an International Baccalaureate World School, is the elementary school where they will thrive.

Students at James R. Watson are preparing for the 21st Century with the District’s consistent curriculum design, along with the concept of “International-Mindedness,” through the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world in which we live.

This approach is based on six disciplinary themes using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, including:

  1. Arts,
  2. Language,
  3. Science,
  4. Mathematics,
  5. Social Studies, and
  6. Physical, Social, and Personal Education

The school is in partnership with the world-renowned International Baccalaureate World School (IB) based on Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum framework. This model addresses students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being needs, encourages students to develop independence, a strong sense of confidence and self-esteem, and to take responsibility for their own learning.

Under this framework, students become better thinkers and risk-takers, more respectful,

and their personal values become the foundation upon which their international-mindedness and social responsibility will develop. This results in students becoming active participants in a lifelong journey of learning in the 21st Century.

Key elements of the inquiry-based PYP curriculum include:

  • Addressing students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being,
  • Encourages students to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning,
  • Supports students’ efforts to gain an understanding of the world, and
  • Helps students establish personal values and international-mindedness.

As an IB World School, James R. Watson teachers and staff participate in ongoing professional development, benefit from a wide range of materials, and have continuous engagement through participating in regional and global networking opportunities.

IB achieves its goals by working in partnership with IB-certified schools, and the professional educators of each school. Through these partnerships, IB World Schools promote intercultural understanding and respect as an essential part of life in the 21st Century. IB offers four programmes for students in grades K-12 to help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.

The programmes include:

  • IB Primary Years Programme, grades K-5th,
  • IB Middle Years Programme, grades 6th-8th,
  • IB Diploma Programme, grades 9th-12th, and

The process to become an IB World School is an intensive, globally consistent process that enables schools to deliver an outstanding IB education. A hallmark of IB Programme Schools is the vast diversity of resources and perspectives that certified schools can tap into for the benefit of each student.
