Visitors & Volunteers
Thank you for showing an interest in visiting and/or volunteering to help students and staff in the DeKalb County Central United School District. We appreciate that many parents and community members want to visit or volunteer at our schools. The safety of our students and staff is a top priority, so we ask for your help in this process.
Step 1: Contact the school you wish to visit and/or volunteer.
Step 2: Regardless of whether you would like to volunteer to help in a classroom or simply visit a student during lunch, ALL Volunteers AND Visitors must complete the Volunteer/Visitor Application. This includes a limited background check. Applications must be submitted annually.
Step 3: An Expanded Criminal History Check should be purchased for $19.45 by ANY individual wishing to work or interact with students who at times may not be under the supervision of a teacher or school representative. ANY volunteer wishing to attend a field trip MUST complete the EXPANDED CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK. Expanded Criminal History checks must be completed at least two weeks prior to the date you wish to volunteer.
After completing the online check, volunteers should allow at least 2 weeks for the results to be available to DeKalb Central Schools. A copy of the results will be mailed to the individual by the district. Once results are received, the volunteer's application will be approved or denied by both the building principal and superintendent.
How Long Are Criminal History Checks Valid? All volunteers with an approved application on file must complete a School Volunteer Renewal Form at the beginning of each school year, at which time a limited criminal history check will be run by the school. Expanded criminal history checks will be on file for three years from the date they were originally processed. The DeKalb Central School Board Policy states that if an incident takes place with an individual, it is the volunteer's responsibility to notify the school district and their status as the volunteer will be reviewed. If it is reported to the school that an individual has had an incident involving criminal history, DeKalb Central Schools have the right to review the volunteer's status sooner.
*Note:
There will be times during the year, where schools will be hosting large-scale events during normal school hours such as student showcases, conferences, exhibits, Grandparent's Day, etc. During these school events, a criminal history check is NOT required. Additional school personnel will be on hand to supervise these events to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors.
Please contact your school with any questions.
